A few days back while working on my Windows Desktop PC I thought of giving a try to “Compress this drive to save disk space” option that I was seeing for past few years and finally I applied it on all my partitions one by one and everything was running quite fine as it was helping to get more free space but unfortunately I ended facing “BOOTMGR is compressed Press CTRL + ALT + DEL error” during the next Windows Startup time which has to happen because of a very silly mistake that I have done by compressing the Original Windows Installation Partition.After searching for an appropriate fix over Internet I found various different fixes for the same error and noticed that I am not the only one to face such error.So during the fixing time period I tried to gather as much as Information about the issue, possible reasons and fixes that I am going to share with you in this article.

What is BOOTMGR ?

BOOTMGR refers to Windows Boot Manager that is responsible for booting of Windows and if it is in compressed mode than it can’t be used so for its normal operation it is necessary that it always remain in uncompressed mode.

Possible Reasons for such error :

One of the most common reason for such error is enabling “Compress this drive to save disk space” option on Windows Installation Partition i.e C: Drive in most cases.

In some-cases it has been observed that some third party software’s that claims to Increase computer performance by cleaning the registry etc also tends to cause this error by compressing the Whole Windows Partition.

BOOTMGR is Compressed Error – Best Solutions

The basic idea behind fixing the error is to recreate the Boot Record in your Hard disk that follows different procedure for different Windows Versions that I have mentioned below.

For Windows XP Only :

  • Get a Bootable Windows XP Installation CD/DVD and Insert it into your CD/DVD Drive.
  • Press Any when the message appears to boot from Installation Disk
  • When your reach the Windows Setup Screen Press R key to Go to Recovery Console
  • Now you will asked to login into your Windows Installation Partition i.e C:\ OR D:\ Drive depending upon your installation location if it is C:\ Drive then press number ‘1’ and hit Enter
  • You will be now asked to enter your admin password that is usually blank unless you have created it manually so no need to fill and Press Enter
  • Now Type the Following Commands One by One and Press Y after entering each command

fixmbr

fixboot

  • After Typing the above commands successful Type Exit and Press Enter
  • Restart Your Computer and You no longer face the same error anymore.
  • That’s all and You are all done.

For Windows 7/8/Vista :

  • Get a Bootable Windows Installation CD/DVD as per your Windows Version and Insert it into your CD/DVD Drive.
  • Press Any when the message appears to boot from Installation Disk
  • When your reach the Windows Setup Screen there you will see System Recovery Option so select it and after that Select Startup Repair and wait till it finishes
  • If the Startup Repair Goes successfully then you will not longer face the same error again and if it doesn’t go successful or you face the same error again don’t worry proceed with the following steps.

BOOTMGR is Compressed Error - Startup Repair FIX

  • Again Go to System Recovery Options and now select Command Prompt Instead of Startup Repair
  • In the Command Prompt Type the Following Commands One by One and Press Enter

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /rebuildbcd

  • After Typing the above commands successful Type Exit and Press Enter
  • Restart Your Computer and You no longer face the same error anymore.
  • That’s all and You are all done.
